The history of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Town of West Yellowstone are closely associated with each other. The town was established with the arrival of the railroad in 1907 and became a popular entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The Union Pacific Railroad built extensive facilities at West Yellowstone to serve the thousands of tourists who arrived by train in the summer months to visit the park. After train service ended, Union Pacific donated its rail facilities at West Yellowstone to the town. Used today for a wide variety of purposes, the structures are a vivid reminder of the era when travel to Yellowstone National Park included a rail journey.
